Material Transgression in Rocko Iremashvili’s Untitled Sculpture

Rocko Iremashvili’s two-metre-high sculpture slightly exceeds the scale of  the human body, giving it a distinctly monumental presence. Its vertical, cylindrical form establishes a direct physical relationship with the viewer. At first encounter, the sculpture appears as a heavy, enclosed, and immobile body: a totemic pillar, a fragment of an industrial structure, or an element of urban infrastructure. This initial sense of rigidity is disrupted by the human hands that emerge from within the cylinder, transforming its strict geometry into a living, bodily form.

The work’s central conceptual tension arises from the confrontation between its materials. The black, rough-surfaced iron pipe, with its structural strength and industrial coldness, evokes the image of a closed system - a mechanized environment in which the human being is reduced to a functional unit. The thick metal wall separates interior from exterior, the private from the public, and the individual from the larger structure. Against this backdrop, the emergence of the artificial-marble hands acquires particular significance. Their white, porcelain-like surface stands in stark contrast to the dark, coarse texture of the iron. This is more than a contrast of colour and texture; it is a collision between fundamentally different material conditions, in which the industrial and structural confront the anthropomorphic and organic.

The sculpture’s dramatic climax lies in the very process by which the hands break through the metal. The split and outward-bent edges of the iron suggest that the hands have emerged from within by overcoming considerable resistance, forcibly expanding the boundaries of the enclosing structure. At this point, the material ceases to function merely as a technical component of the sculpture and becomes the primary vehicle of its narrative. The position of the hands reinforces this interpretation: extended into space, slightly inclined downward, and arrested in movement, they embody several interrelated states at once - an attempt at liberation, the recovery of balance, an exploration of space, and a rediscovery of the body itself. It is this combination of suspended movement and psychological ambiguity that gives the gesture its distinctly human force and expressive intensity.

In Iremashvili’s work, there is no face, torso, or complete human figure; the human presence is reduced to two hands. Yet this very fragmentation intensifies the figure’s presence, compelling the viewer to reconstruct imaginatively the body that remains concealed within the cylinder. The notion of the boundary is therefore fundamental to the work. The iron pipe functions simultaneously as an object and a threshold, while the hands embody the force that crosses it. In this sense, transgression becomes the sculpture’s formal principle: what is meant to remain inside emerges into the outside; what is designed to remain closed is forced open. Transgression here signifies not simply the breaking of a physical barrier, but the crossing of an established boundary and the challenge to the limits it imposes.

The industrial cylinder also functions as a metaphor for the modern urban and technological environment. As a conventional element of infrastructure, a pipe is designed to contain, channel, or transport something; it has no individuality of its own. Iremashvili transforms this impersonal object into a container for the human body, turning the sculpture into an expressive image of an existential condition. The enclosed metal structure can be understood as a metaphor for any framework within which an individual may become confined - whether institutional, social, psychological, or personal. The emergence of the hands thus becomes a universal gesture of resistance to such confinement: a critique of a dehumanized environment and an expression of the desire for inner freedom.

Significantly, however, liberation is not represented as a completed act. The hands have only partially broken through the metal, while the rest of the body remains concealed within it. It is precisely this incompleteness that generates the work’s emotional intensity. The viewer is not presented with a definitive moment of escape, but with freedom as an unfolding process - something that has begun, but has not yet been achieved.

Iremashvili sets industrial material against bodily form, enclosed geometry against an expansive gesture, and structural immobility against the latent sense of movement. Through its encounter with the artificial-marble hands, the heavy mass of iron loses its purely functional identity and becomes charged with human meaning. The sculpture’s central drama therefore lies not simply in the rupture of the metal, but in the transformation of impersonal matter from within. The work ultimately becomes an image of resistance and the redefinition of one’s own boundaries - a state in which the human remains partially confined, yet has already begun to break apart the structure that seeks to contain it.
