ავთო ვარაზი (1926–1977)
ავთო ვარაზი ქართველი ნონკონფორმისტი მხატვარია, რომლის მხატვრული
პრაქტიკა კოლაჟის, ასამბლაჟის, ფერწერისა და გრაფიკის სინთეზზეა დაფუძნებული.
1943–1948 წლებში სწავლობდა საქართველოს პოლიტექნიკური ინსტიტუტის
არქიტექტურის ფაკულტეტზე. 1948–1951 წლებში სწავლა განაგრძო საქართველოს
მეცნიერებათა აკადემიის ხელოვნების ისტორიის ინსტიტუტის ასპირანტურაში.
საერთაშორისო აღიარება და გამოფენები
1965 წლიდან ავთო ვარაზის ნამუშევრები ეტაპობრივად,
არალეგალურად ტოვებდა საქართველოს (იმჟამად საბჭოთა კავშირის
შემადგენლობაში მყოფ რესპუბლიკას), რასაც მისი შემოქმედების საერთაშორისო
ასპარეზზე გამოჩენა მოჰყვა.
1967 წელს ნიუ-იორკის თანამედროვე ხელოვნების მუზეუმმა (MoMA)
შეიძინა მხატვრის ნამუშევარი Bleeding Buffalo (დაჭრილი ხარი, 1962).
1967 წელს მან მონაწილეობა მიიღო გამოფენაში A Survey of
Russian Painting: Fifteenth Century to the Present, რომელიც
ნიუ-იორკში, The Gallery of Modern Art, Huntington Hartford
Collection-ში გაიმართა.
1974 წლის 26 სექტემბრიდან 20 ოქტომბრამდე ვარაზი მონაწილეობდა
ნიუ-იორკის თანამედროვე ხელოვნების მუზეუმის (MoMA) გამოფენაში Contemporary
Soviet Art: A Selection from the Museum’s Collection, სადაც
წარმოდგენილი იყო მისი ნამუშევარი Bleeding Buffalo (დაჭრილი ხარი, 1962).
გამოფენაში ასევე მონაწილეობდნენ ერნსტ ნეიზვესტნი, ვლადიმირ ნემუხინი, დიმიტრი
პლავინსკი, ანატოლი ზვერევი, ვასილი სიტნიკოვი და უილიამ ბრუი.
1975 წელს მისი ნამუშევრები წარმოდგენილი იყო გამოფენაზე Russischer
Februar 75 in Wien, ალექსანდრ გლეზერის კოლექციის ფარგლებში, ვენის Künstlerhaus-ში, ავსტრია.
1975–1976 წლებში ვარაზი მონაწილეობდა გერმანიის ფედერაციული
რესპუბლიკის სახელოვნებო გაერთიანებების საგამოფენო პროექტებში (Kunstverein), რომლებიც
გაიმართა ბრაუნშვაიგში, ფრაიბურგში, კონსტანცში და ზაულგაუში, Städtische

მონჟერონში, საფრანგეთი. იმავე წელს ვარაზის შემოქმედება დაფიქსირებული
იყო პარიზში გამართულ არაოფიციალური ხელოვნების დიდ ფორუმზე (Paris Congrès
1976).
1977: საერთაშორისო აღიარების კულმინაცია
1977 წელს, მხატვრის გარდაცვალების წელს, ავთო ვარაზის ხელოვნება მოხვდა ევროპასა და აშშ-ში გამართულ არაოფიციალური საბჭოთა
ხელოვნების ყველა საკვანძო გამოფენაზე.
1977 წელს ლონდონში ჩატარდა გამოფენა Unofficial Art
from the Soviet Union, ხოლო ამერიკულ საგამოფენო დოკუმენტაციაში დაფიქსირდა მისი კოლაჟი Untitled (უსათაურო, 55 × 44
სმ).
1977 წლის 15 ნოემბრიდან 15 დეკემბრამდე ავთო ვარაზი მონაწილეობდა
ვენეციის ბიენალეზე - Biennale del Dissenso (დისიდენტთა
ბიენალე), იტალიაში. ვენეციის ბიენალეს ფარგლებში მოწყობილ ისტორიულ გამოფენაზე - La nuova arte
sovietica: una prospettiva non ufficiale (ახალი საბჭოთა
ხელოვნება: არაოფიციალური პერსპექტივა; კურატორები: ენრიკო კრისპოლტი და გაბრიელა მონკადა) - ვარაზის
ნამუშევრები წარმოდგენილი
იყო დიაპოზიტივების სახით (Carousel G). გამოფენაში
ასევე მონაწილეობდნენ ილია კაბაკოვი, ერიკ ბულატოვი, ვიქტორ პივოვაროვი, იგორ
ზახაროვ-როსი და ოლეგ ვასილიევი.
ბიენალეს ოფიციალურ კატალოგში ვარაზი შეყვანილი იყო სექციაში Ironia e
altro, intorno al quotidiano (ირონია და სხვა, ყოველდღიურობის ირგვლივ).
ბიენალეს კატალოგში ასევე დოკუმენტირებული იყო ვარაზის ნამუშევარი Il toro (The Bull /
Bull’s Head, 1973; კოლაჟი, 68 × 47 სმ), რომელიც მონჟერონში, ა. გლეზერის
კოლექციაში ინახებოდა.
ავთო ვარაზის ნამუშევრები დღემდე ჩნდება მნიშვნელოვან საერთაშორისო
აუქციონებზე. 2007 წელს მხატვრის ნამუშევარი ხარის თავი (1973)
გაიყიდა ლონდონის MacDougall’s-ის
აუქციონზე, რომელიც აღმოსავლეთევროპულ და საბჭოთა პერიოდის ნონკონფორმისტულ
ხელოვნებაზე სპეციალიზებული საერთაშორისო აუქციონის სახლია.
გამოფენები საქართველოში და ავთო ვარაზთან დაკავშირებული
მოვლენები
1962 წელს მხატვარ ლევ ბაიახჩევთან ერთად ალეკო გეგეჭკორის ბინაში
დაგეგმილი ვარაზის პირველი პერსონალური გამოფენა გახსნის წინა დღეს ოფიციალურად
აიკრძალა, როგორც საბჭოთა სინამდვილისთვის შეუფერებელი.
1971 წელს, მხატვარ ელენე ახვლედიანის რჩევით, მის ბინა-სახელოსნოში
იგეგმებოდა ავთო ვარაზის პერსონალური გამოფენა. ნამუშევრებიც შეიკრიბა, თუმცა
გამოფენა თავად მხატვრის გადაწყვეტილებით არ გაიმართა.
1977 წლის მაისში, მხატვრის გარდაცვალებიდან ორი თვის შემდეგ, მისი
პირველი პერსონალური გამოფენა მოეწყო ათონელის ქუჩაზე მდებარე საზღვარგარეთის
ქვეყნებთან მეგობრობისა და კულტურული ურთიერთობის საქართველოს საზოგადოების
საგამოფენო დარბაზში.
1997 წელს, მხატვრის დაბადების დღისადმი მიძღვნილი პერსონალური
გამოფენა გაიმართა საქართველოს რუსთაველის საზოგადოების საგამოფენო დარბაზში,
თბილისში, რუსთაველის გამზირის 27-ში.
2011 წელს ავთო ვარაზის რეტროსპექტული გამოფენა გაიმართა TBC
გალერეაში, თბილისში.
2013 წელს, თბილისის სახელმწიფო სამხატვრო აკადემიის ორგანიზებით,
ავთო ვარაზის რეტროსპექტული გამოფენა გაიმართა თბილისის ზურაბ წერეთლის
თანამედროვე ხელოვნების მუზეუმში.
2021 წელს, საქართველოს ეროვნული მუზეუმის ორგანიზებით, სიღნაღის
ისტორიულ-ეთნოგრაფიულ მუზეუმში გაიმართა გამოფენა თავისუფლებით შთაგონებული
ხელოვნება. გამოფენაზე, ავთო ვარაზის ნამუშევრებთან ერთად, წარმოდგენილი იყო
ოთარ ჩხარტიშვილის, თემო ჯაფარიძის, ამირ კაკაბაძის, ავთო მესხის, ვატია დავითაშვილისა და კარლო გრიგოლიას ნამუშევრები.
2027 წელს დიმიტრი
შევარდნაძის სახელობის საქართველოს ეროვნულ გალერეაში გაიმართება გამოფენა ავთო ვარაზი და
ქართული ნონკონფორმიზმი. 50 წელი მხატვრის გარდაცვალებიდან.
Avto Varazi (1926–1977)
Avto Varazi was a Georgian nonconformist artist whose artistic
practice was based on a synthesis of collage, assemblage, painting, and graphic
art.
From 1943 to 1948, he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of
the Georgian Polytechnic Institute. From 1948 to 1951, he continued his studies
as a postgraduate student at the Institute of Art History of the Georgian
Academy of Sciences.
International Recognition and Exhibitions
From 1965 onward, Avto Varazi’s works gradually and illegally left
Georgia (then a republic within the Soviet Union), leading to the emergence of
his work on the international art scene.
In 1967, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York acquired the artist’s
Bleeding
Buffalo (Wounded Bull, 1962).
In 1967, he participated in the exhibition A Survey of
Russian Painting: Fifteenth Century to the Present, held at The Gallery
of Modern Art, Huntington Hartford Collection in New York.
From September 26 to October 20, 1974, Varazi participated in the
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) exhibition Contemporary Soviet Art: A Selection from the Museum’s Collection,
where his work Bleeding
Buffalo (Wounded Bull, 1962) was presented. The exhibition also
included works by Ernst Neizvestny, Vladimir Nemukhin, Dmitri Plavinsky,
Anatoly Zverev, Vasily Sitnikov, and William Brui.
In 1975, his works were presented in the exhibition Russischer
Februar 75 in Wien, as part of Alexander Glezer’s collection, at
the Künstlerhaus
in Vienna, Austria.
In 1975–1976, Varazi participated in exhibition projects organized
by art associations (Kunstverein) in the Federal Republic of Germany, held
in Braunschweig, Freiburg, Konstanz, and at Städtische Galerie Die Fähre in Saulgau. The curator
of the European exhibition tour was Alexander Glezer.
In 1976, his works were presented at the Musée Russe
en Exil, a museum of Russian art in exile, in Montgeron, France.
The same year, Varazi’s work was documented at the major forum of unofficial
art held in Paris, Paris Congrès 1976.
1977: The Culmination of International
Recognition
In 1977, the year of the artist’s death, Avto Varazi’s work was
included in all major exhibitions of unofficial Soviet art held in Europe and
the United States.
In 1977, the exhibition Unofficial Art from the Soviet Union was held in
London, while his collage Untitled (Untitled, 55 × 44 cm) was documented in American
exhibition records.
From November 15 to December 15, 1977, Avto Varazi participated in
the Venice Biennale - Biennale del Dissenso (Biennale of Dissent), Italy.
Within the framework of the Venice Biennale, at the historic exhibition La nuova arte
sovietica: una prospettiva non ufficiale (New Soviet
Art: An Unofficial Perspective; curators: Enrico Crispolti and
Gabriella Moncada), Varazi’s works were presented as slides (Carousel G).
The exhibition also included works by Ilya Kabakov, Erik Bulatov, Viktor
Pivovarov, Igor Zakharov-Ross, and Oleg Vassiliev.
In the official Biennale catalogue, Varazi was included in the section
Ironia e
altro, intorno al quotidiano (Irony and Other Things, Around Everyday Life).
The Biennale catalogue also documented Varazi’s work Il toro
(The Bull /
Bull’s Head, 1973; collage, 68 × 47 cm), which was held in A.
Glezer’s collection in Montgeron.
Avto Varazi’s works continue to appear at major international
auctions. In 2007, the artist’s work Bull’s Head (1973) was sold at the MacDougall’s
auction in London, an international auction house specializing in Eastern
European and Soviet-era nonconformist art.
Exhibitions in Georgia and Events Related to Avto
Varazi
In 1962, Varazi’s first solo exhibition, planned together with the
artist Lev Bayakhchev at Aleko Gegechkori’s apartment, was officially
prohibited on the eve of its opening as unsuitable for Soviet reality.
In 1971, on the advice of the artist Elene Akhvlediani, a solo
exhibition of Avto Varazi was planned at her apartment-studio. The works were
also assembled, but the exhibition did not take place at the artist’s own
decision.
In May 1977, two months after the artist’s death, his first solo
exhibition was organized at the exhibition hall of the Georgian Society for
Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, located on Atoneli
Street.
In 1997, a solo exhibition dedicated to the artist’s birthday was
held at the exhibition hall of the Rustaveli Society of Georgia, at 27
Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi.
In 2011, a retrospective exhibition of Avto Varazi was held at TBC
Gallery in Tbilisi.
In 2013, organized by Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, a
retrospective exhibition of Avto Varazi was held at the Zurab Tsereteli Museum
of Modern Art in Tbilisi.
In 2021, an exhibition titled Art Inspired by Freedom was held at the Sighnaghi
Historical-Ethnographic Museum, organized by the Georgian National Museum.
Alongside Avto Varazi’s works, the exhibition presented works by Otar
Chkhartishvili, Temo Japaridze, Amir Kakabadze, Avto Meskhi, Vatia
Davitashvili, and Carlo Grigolia.
In 2027, the exhibition Avto Varazi and Georgian Nonconformism: 50 Years Since the Artist’s Death will be held at the Dimitri Shevardnadze Georgian National Gallery.
